"The only way to build trust professionally and personally is by being trustworthy. I hope I'm living up to that standard." Gerard Arpey, American Airlines CEO, worked hard to be transparent after taking the helm from Donald Carty who had hidden executive perks into a proposed financial package that would simultaneously cut worker wages. One secretive selfish leader followed by one sincere transparent leader. Which do you think built trust?
Behavior #3 is about being open, being real, being genuine, telling the truth in a way people can verify.
Consider the words: transparent (light passes through) and opaque (something is concealed, blurry, vague).
Covey makes the point that the counterfeit of transparency is to pretend like you're being honest, open and authentic when you're actually obscuring some fact, reality or feeling. Can you think of any companies in recent business news that have obscured some internal reality only to their demise?
"Particularly when trust is low, people don't trust what they can't see. By opening things up, you assure people that there's nothing to hide."
Summary of Behavior #3: Create Transparency
* Tell the truth in a way people can verify
* Get real and genuine
* Be open and authentic
* Err on the side of disclosure
* Operate on the premise of "what you see is what you get"
* Don't have hidden agendas
* Don't hide information
I don't think you can disclose everything but hiding everything certainly leads to mistrust. I don't understand how people think "counterfeit transparency" is an option. How do they think no one will ever find out?? It may not happen right away, but they will be found out. Not to mention how stressful their life must be; they spend most of it looking over their shoulder! Do the right thing and have the courage to be honest.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they are considering the fact that the truth always comes out. Covey wrote the example of the power struggle of knowing of something that others don't. It's a short term ego trip
DeleteChanyn, you make the good point about having courage to be honest. I can't think of specific examples, but I know I have personally taken ethical shortcuts (or hidden selective information) because I felt it would be to my advantage. Maybe that is the thrust behind social politics, posturing for maximum personal advantage. And I can also think about the common scenario where whistle-blowers were fired for their "transparency" or worse than that, perhaps retaliated against for being the forthright and honest employee. The unfortunate truth is, society and business in general do not reward transparency. I don't know if you agree, but it seems that "in order to win, you have to play the game". Thoughts?
